About the Role

The Sustainability Systems Specialist will serve as a key contributor within COTA’s planning and operations departments to drive initiatives aimed at optimizing resource utilization, improving system efficiencies, and ensuring regulatory compliance related to environmental stewardship. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment, development, and implementation of sustainable operational practices focused on resource efficiency and environmental responsibility.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and planning teams to integrate advanced technologies and processes that enhance the environmental performance of transit fleets and facilities.
  • Manage data collection and analysis related to energy usage, emissions, waste diversion, and other sustainability indicators to support informed decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, municipal ordinances, and industry standards governing transit operations and infrastructure.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, project proposals, and presentations for stakeholders including internal departments, regulatory bodies, and community partners.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, innovations, and best practices within sustainable urban transportation and infrastructure management.
  • Educate and engage COTA staff and partners on sustainable practices and environmental initiatives to foster organizational-wide commitment.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in sustainable systems within transportation or infrastructure sectors will be highly preferred.

Professional accomplishments should include:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience leading sustainability initiatives or environmental performance projects, preferably within public transit or urban infrastructure.
  • Proficient in quantitative data analysis tools and sustainability performance monitoring software.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable environmental laws, standards, and sustainability frameworks pertinent to transit operations.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
