Who We Are Looking For

We are currently inviting applications for the role of Conservation Steward, a vital position focused on protecting and managing the natural heritage of the Northern Cape. This role bridges fieldwork, data analysis, and community partnership to ensure the ongoing health and stability of our conservation sites.

Role Overview

As a Conservation Steward, you will be intimately involved with the day-to-day monitoring, assessment, and protection of diverse habitats found within Namaqualand. You will work closely with fellow staff members, volunteers, researchers, and local communities, fostering strong relationships that unite around the shared goal of environmental sustainability and conservation excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Habitat Monitoring and Field Assessment: Conduct regular field surveys to assess the condition of ecosystems, track wildlife populations, and identify potential threats such as invasive species, pollution, or habitat degradation.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Accurately record field observations and measurements using established scientific protocols and digital tools; prepare detailed reports to inform conservation strategies and decision-making processes.
  • Community Engagement: Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with local communities and stakeholders, facilitating awareness events, workshops, and educational programs that promote stewardship and shared responsibility for natural resources.
  • Conservation Project Support: Assist in the implementation and monitoring of conservation projects, including species rehabilitation efforts, habitat restoration, and sustainable resource management plans.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate actively in team meetings and strategic planning sessions; contribute ideas and feedback to continually improve conservation outcomes and workplace culture.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences, Wildlife Management, Ecology, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in outdoor fieldwork, species identification, and ecological assessments.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills, with keen attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with data collection technologies (e.g., GPS devices, mobile data apps) and basic data analysis software.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to engage effectively with colleagues, local residents, and external partners.
  • A proactive, solution-oriented attitude coupled with resilience to thrive in a dynamic and sometimes challenging environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, to accommodate field activities and community events.
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are advantageous.
